Our Story:

Buck Creek Coffee was established in 2019 by Karen DeVito, who envisioned a meeting place for the Alabaster, Pelham, and Helena community. Her dream was an inviting, shabby-chic living room with a couple meeting rooms attached, serving coffee from fresh-roasted beans from our near-by roaster, offering unique teas & snacks. And that is exactly what Buck Creek Coffee is, a place to sip, nosh, work, meet, chill, and repeat.

Our Name:

We named it "Buck Creek Coffee" after Psalm 42:1: "As the Buck thirsts for the clear water of the running creek, so my soul desires you, my God." and also because our coffee house sits 3 blocks from where the Cahaba Valley Creek flows into the Buck Creek and where the Buck Creek enters Pelham from Alabaster and turns toward Helena and the dam at Old Town.

It is the point of confluence of the three communities that Buck Creek Coffee House serves, a meeting place of the life blood of local culture. Even in this modern age, communities are shaped by creeks and rivers, roads are defined by them, and the flow of the traffic of commerce is directed by their subtle influence. Nor did it escape us that our coffee house would be a place for people to meet and conduct business in hopes of developing "income streams" and "cash flows" and we love a good pun.

Our Logo:

The letters of "Buck Creek" are in a chubby font called "Goudy Stout". They were chosen to symbolize fullness, fertility and fruitfulness and are green, the color of coffee leaves, to symbolize growth. The fat green letters were also chosen to be visually similar to those on a US dollar bill which of course is called a "buck". The broad brown cup, the color of roasted coffee beans, symbolizes service, its handle ready to receive your hand, its unseen contents ready to be discovered. The tan-colored steam is the color of coffee crema (the layer of foam found on the surface of a shot of espresso coffee) and in the shape of a young buck's antler, but it is also the shape of the merging and confluence of two creeks, in this case the Cahaba Valley Creek and the Buck Creek, symbolizing the coming together of the three communities that Buck Creek Coffee House serves.

Our Owner:

Karen is a seasoned entrepreneur, and has successfully run many businesses, and has always wanted to own a coffee house. In fact, she met her husband in a coffee house in New York . Though she has been out of the coffee-house scene since she managed one in college, she has fallen right back into her stride, completing all of her permits and inspection within seven business days of learning of the availability of the space and the equipment. As a coffee house owner, she's been making quite a stir in the Pelham, Alabama business community by offering a unique venue to meet and conduct business that is half conference room, half living room, as well as providing a comfortable setting to read a book, laugh with a friend, listen to great music while enjoying the free WiFi... Karen is passionate about people, and promoting wellness, and has found a new vehicle to accomplish both. When she's not behind the counter at Buck Creek Coffee, you can find her advocating a healthy and non-toxic lifestyle.
